For the past few years, I lived in a world where my self-expression felt constrained. While I was working in many technical fields, it was hard for me to express myself creatively. I felt I needed to actively try to fit in, not to be ostracized for being a female in a male-dominated industry. I needed to dress a certain way. I needed to laugh at derogative jokes that I didn’t find funny. I needed to masculinize myself. I couldn’t talk about what I found passionate.
My journey from feeling restricted in my creative expression to embracing many creative avenues is a story of my transformation and empowerment. Overcoming barriers that previously seemed insurmountable has been requiring remarkable fortitude and resilience. By doing so, I am trying to redefine what it means to be creative and challenge the norms that dictate what defines a person’s creativity.
